What if you ask a question and nobody answers?

Wait silently. This is often the most effective strategy. Students can be used to lecturers answering their own questions, so if you wait a bit longer than feels comfortable, often someone will take the initiative.
Ask students to talk about possible answers in pairs; then you can ask a pair to report on their answer.
